تميز النفط بمزايا جعلت منه مادة حيوية وضعته موضع الصدارة بالنسبة لمصادر الطاقة الأخرى، منها تزايد استخداماته كمصدر طاقة لتحريك المكائن و المعدات و كمادة أولية لصناعات مختلفة، فضلاً عن سهولة نقله و خزنه، و قلة تكاليف استخراجه و انتاجه مقارنة مع مصادر الطاقة الأخرى، و هو مادة قابلة للنضوب، مما جعل خبراء الطاقة و الاقتصاد يؤكدون بأنه سيظل البديل الأفضل من بين مصادر الطاقة الناضبة و المتجددة من النواحي الاقتصادية و الفنية و البيئية ، و هذا ما يؤكده الصراع الذي يدور بين القوى العظمى منذ نهائيات القرن التاسع عشر و التي ظلت أشكاله تتسع و تتعمق يوماً بعد آخر.

It is a depletable material, which has led energy and economists to assert that it will remain the best alternative among the depleted and renewable energy sources in economic, technical and environmental aspects; this is confirmed by the struggle between the great powers since the end of the 19th century, whose forms have been expanding and deepening day after day.
